RADIUS SERVER - IT’S HISTORY AND FUTURE

Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service ( RADIUS Server ) is an authentication system that works on the protocol of remote users. It is a client-based networking server that runs on the basis of application layers. Its prime function is to build a core connection of user identities working on a network platform so that no outsider can intrude on the server. The main purpose of RADIUS Server is to determine whether a user can get access to a remote server on the basis of their identity, cause permission to enter the network portfolio is only allowed to the unregistered identities and users.

RADIUS protocol uses RADIUS Server and RADIUS Client for its function. RADIUS Client is more like a networking device that is used for authentication whereas RADIUS Server is a background process that runs on the network.

A RADIUS Server has a lot of components, which ultimately build up the structure of the security system, and its components are as follows -

  1. Supplicant: It is actually an installed software inside the network system,  which passes the information to NAS about the user trying to enter the system.

  1. NAS: It actually works as the client in a client/server architecture.

  1. Server: This is the main functioning body of the whole security system and it waits for the requests from the NAS, so as to verify them.

HISTORY

RADIUS Server was developed by Livingston Enterprises in the year 1991. The running protocol of RADIUS is based on AAA (Authentication, Authorization, Accounting). After it was introduced, the team was contacted by Merit Networks and was even awarded by them for discovering the system.

Later Merit Networks started installing “Portmaster”, which allowed the users to authenticate the servers with dial-in. As soon as the RADIUS Server system was introduced, NAS vendors started purchasing them. And since then people still use it and it is yet one of the best security systems.

FUTURE

At this point in time, installing RADIUS is easy but if one has to set it up on their own it is indeed a hard task and only the ones with technical knowledge can do it. And if you don’t acquire it then you can go for Hosting RADIUS solution.

This solution provides you with a setup RADIUS Server and often they are known by many names. Also, the perks of it are that they are cost-effective and help the user to utilize the security benefits of RADIUS Servers.
